Historic Sylvan Park in southwest Nashville is located in Davidson County about 10 minutes from downtown Nashville TN real estate. Beautiful parks, waterways, and recreational areas surround Sylvan Park Tennessee homes and other nearby quaint communities such as Belle Meade, Berry Hill, and Hillsboro Village.
After the Civil War, real estate in Nashville was in ruins. People were concerned about safety. Neighborhoods smelled of winter coal smoke and black soot would permeate a white starched shirt by lunchtime. The city still had no sewers and poor hygiene was rampant.
To get away from the problems in the city, people headed out to the scenic Richland Park for a picnic and the clear waters of Richland Creek. It was accessible via the relatively well-maintained Charlotte Pike toll road and via passenger train and steamboat. General James Robertson, Nashville’s founder, chose this Nashville land as his own. Several wealthy pre-war Victorian mansions with formal gardens and hunting grounds stood to the west of Richland Park.
It was Doctor Henry M. Pierce who in 1887 organized a land company that he thought would found a new city there called “New Town.” Pierce’s company bought 4,000 acres around the area, laid out lot lines and, with much fanfare, offered them for sale in a grand opening. The doctor named the streets after the home states of potential buyers. Later, James A. Bowling bought the first lot—now on 4501 Nebraska Street— and several more for later development. The tree-laden acreage, known as “Sylvan Park,” eventually lent its name to the entire area. “New Town” weathered tornadoes and the depression of 1893 and finally became a part of West Nashville.
The lovely natural setting still offers surcease through popular recreational activities including boating, fishing and hunting. The National Register of Historic Places lists another historic area, The Percy and Edwin Warner Parks comprising almost 2,700 acres of picnic grounds, an equestrian center, running courses, golf courses, athletic fields, and great places to hike.
The area features some of the best schools in the state and nearby Vanderbilt, Fisk, Lipscomb, Peabody and Belmont universities near the lively cultural base of Music City, USA only a short 10-minute drive away.
