Green Hills is a bedroom community located in Southwest Nashville, adjacent to and north of Oak Hill, Forrest Hills and Belle Meade.

Originally developed as private residences, economic forces have expanded the area into a shopping and entertainment center (Green Hills Mall and the "world famous" Bluebird Café),
Familiar family names from the 1800's include Castleman, Compton, Ruckner, Hunt, Boyd, Foster, Seals and Elliston. The area offers the city's most expensive upscale condominium developments (along with the West End area) and some limited rental apartments. Older neighborhoods such as Whitland, Bowling, Golf Club/Hampton, and Woodmont Estates serve as one of the highest appreciating areas of the city. Senior executives, music executives and active in these neighborhoods. Vanderbilt University, Belmont University, and David Lipscomb University all border on Lots of College kids live near campuses.
Because there is no formal "city" as such defined in the area, popular Green Hills neighborhoods include Glendale, Belmont, Vanderbilt/Hillsboro, Woodmont Estates, Whitland/Bowling, Estes/Abbot Martin, and Burton Hills. All should be considered part of the mix.
The average price of a home in Green Hills was $350,000 in 2003. There is a huge mixture of new and old, as homes are renovated or torn down. Most homes were built in the 1950-70's. There are 2,615 housing units in Green Hills. Roughly 176 of those changed hands in 2003. Keys to value lie in buying intelligently, with a thorough knowledge of the surrounding neighborhoods and traffic patterns. An occasional fixer-upper is still out there, but be prepared to pay top dollar and check with your realtor when preparing to hire contractors.
Roughly, the population of Green Hills is 7,068. The median resident age is 39.5 years and the median family income is $67,000. Almost 90% graduated high school, and 24% have a bachelors degree or higher. 69% of the population over15 years old are married and average drive time to work is in the quarter hour range.
There are several neighborhood parks in the area. Many streets have sidewalks for walking. Many parks include the Warner Park Complex (see Belle Meade), the Radnor Lake natural area (see Oak Hill). University facilities are part of the community and offered for use.
Green Hills is close to 3 interstates: I440, I65 and I40. Drive time to downtown is often under 8 minutes. The Nashville airport is 15 minutes to the east and the private John Tune airport is 15 minutes to the west.
Private schools lie within the community and Universities are virtually in the neighborhood. Major medical facilities are also adjacent.
Famed Music Row is only blocks away. Shopping, medical, entertainment, employment and education centers all lay within the parameters of this neighborhood. Hundreds of condominiums are located in Green Hills ranging in price from the low 100's to half a million dollars. There are a limited number of apartments, many of which are located between Green Hills and the College communities of Belmont and Vanderbilt.
